A Guide to Lube

There are so many different types of lubricant out there now, how do you know what’s the best fit for you? You’re about to find out!

What Is Lube?

Personal lubricant, or “lube,” is a liquid or gel that’s intended to prevent unwanted friction during sex.

You can use it for many types of sex, including penetrative and anal sex, as well as masturbation. Some types are also safe to use with toys.

Why Use Lube?

When it comes to sex, no matter what you enjoy, you can usually play by the rule: the wetter, the better. Lube increases sensation and pleasure during sex, and decreases friction. Not only does this help make penetration feel better but by decreasing friction, you reduce the risks of micro-tears and infections. It is also a great aid when using condoms as some good lubricants can reduce the risk of a condom breaking.

When it comes to anal play, lube is an absolute must-have item, because the anus and rectum are not self-lubricating. Anal without a good quality lubricant the delicate rectal tissue is at risk of damage. This can lead to painful tears called anal fissures or even damage to the anal sphincter (the tight ring of muscle surrounding the anus) which can lead to fecal incontinence.

How To Choose?

Personal lube can be a great enhancement to your sex life, but the number of options can be overwhelming. The goal of lube for most is to decrease friction and increase comfort and pleasure, so finding what works for you is a highly personal decision.

When shopping for lube, you’ll want to consider how you’re going to use it. If you’re going to be using a condom or silicone sex toys, you’ll need to find a compatible option.

Waterbased Lube

Water-based lube is a great all-rounder. It’s safe for vaginal sex, anal play, and sex toys of all materials. It is known as the most versatile lubricant and is also safe for condoms. This type of lube is most popular for three reasons: It won’t stain your sheets, it’s easy on the skin, and it washes off easily in water.

Pros:
• Versatile Option
• Safe for Condom Use
• Safe for sex toys of all materials
• Won’t stain
• Good for sensitive skin

Cons:
• Some brands can be too watery
• May need to reapply for anal sex

Silicone Lube

If you’re interested in something more long-lasting that needs to be reapplied less often, you may have found your match. Since silicone is hypoallergenic, most people with sensitive skin won’t experience a reaction. It’s safe to use for vaginal and anal sex.

Pros:
• Long-lasting
• Good for sensitive skin
• The best choice for anal sex
• Its waterproof nature makes it great for shower sex

Cons:
• Silicone Lube can damage silicone and real-feel sex toys
• Some brands can feel sticky

Oil-based Lube

Oil-based lubes are long-lasting and can double up as a massage oil. But the downside comes if you’re using a latex condom. It’s not recommended to use oil-based lubes with latex condoms, since it can increase the risk of rips and tears.

Pros:
• Long-lasting
• Doubles up as a massage oil

Cons:
• Not suitable for use with latex condoms
• Not suitable for silicone sex toys
• Research studies have shown that it is associated with a higher risk of yeast infections
• Can stain bedsheets and/or clothing.

Hybrid Lube

Hybrid lubes are most commonly a combination of silicone and water. They were formulated to perfectly suit your needs. They allow water-based lubes to have the lasting effect of silicone lube without feeling at thick or sticky as a full silicone lube.

Pros:
• Long Lasting
• Not too thick
• Great for anal play

Cons:
• Not suitable for silicone sex toys
• Oil hybrids are not suitable for condom use

Now you know the difference between lube types, you can decide which lubricant is the best fit for you. If you’re feeling super adventurous you could add in a flavored lube for oral sex, or even a warming or tingling lube for added sensations. Happy sliding!
